A personal beginning
Almost 10 years ago, my youngest child was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The school needed to be provided with instructions for the daily management of meal times and physical activity. They also needed to know when urgent actions were required.
I filled in the standard management and action plan templates and gave them to the teacher and education assistant. But all of that information over multiple pages can become overwhelming for anyone responsible for a child with complex needs, especially in time-sensitive situations when it is harder to think clearly.
I quickly realised it would be really helpful to have a summary that displayed only the information that was important for a school day and relevant for my child.
That is when I used my design skills to produce my own quick-reference support plan.
Meeting a need
I noticed that other families in the Type 1 community wanted support plans that are concise and fully customised. Many of them have successfully used earlier versions of my one-page plan over the years, appreciating the clarity and personalisation. School staff and coaches also find them easy to use and give positive feedback.
More recently, I realised that there is a wider need for personalised quick-reference support plans.
I developed Quick Look so that I can offer these plans and resources to all children and adults needing support for health, disability, neurodivergent or behavioural needs.
A note about language
The words we use matter. Throughout this website and in my example plans, I have done my best to use language that is respectful, inclusive and easy to understand.
I acknowledge that language is continually evolving and recognise that everyone has their own preferences when it comes to describing health conditions, disabilities, neurodivergence and individual needs.
Because every Quick Look plan is personalised, the language used within your plan will be too. I will work with you to ensure the wording reflects your preferences and accurately represents the person it has been created for.
